Living the Ghetto and Trastevere

The Ghetto and it’s history

We will head into the streets of the Jewish Ghetto, a lively and historic corner of Rome, not far from the Colosseum but hidden from the crowds of tourists. We will retrace the sad and unforgettable events of this place, no more than three hectares, where Pope Paul V in 1555 with the papal bull (an edict issued by the Pope) cum nimis absurdum, established the Jewish Ghetto. This edict drastically limited the Jewish people’s liberties through the revocation of all their rights. It will be an evocative experience to enter the alleys of this neighbourhood that are still deeply imbued with charm and history, from the portico of Ottavia to Via della Reginella reaching the Fontana delle Tartarughe before passing by the Synagogue up to the Lungotevere. We will admire the local shops without missing the opportunity to taste the confectionery specialties of the Judeo-Roman tradition.

Trastevere and it’s cobbled streets

We will head over to Trastevere by crossing the Tiber Island where the 16th century
Fatebenefratelli hospital reminds us of the medical history of the island which began with the ancient Roman temple of Aesculapius. At Piazza in Piscinula (named for the presence of an ancient spa), we will admire one of the smallest churches in Rome: San Benedetto in Piscinula. We will lose ourselves in the alleys and cobbled streets of the most authentic and genuine district of the city until we reach the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The church is known to be the heart of the district, and home to extraordinary masterpieces, among which we must mention the rich decoration of the apse. An itinerary not to be missed for those who want to be conquered by one of the unexpected faces of the city of Rome, in an unconventional path full of surprises.

Don’t Forget

It is only possible to visit the inside of the Churches in respect to the opening hours and liturgical celebrations in progress.
